The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) was officially commissioned on the 23rd of July, 1983 by former President Aliyu Shehu Shagari, GCFR. The hospital now has total bed capacity of about 1305 with 17 clinical and 14 non clinical department; serving a population of over 30 million in the North East Geopolitical Zone, comprising six states namely, Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, and Gombe;as well as a sizeable number across the border of the Cameroun, Niger and Chad Republic.

Designated by the Federal Government of Nigeria as Centre of Excellence in Immunology and Infectious Diseases in 1986, the UMTH has also gained recognition through some collaboration with some International Bodies and Institution such as Harvard School of Public Health -PEPFAR, APIN, and PMTCT; the World Health Organization (WHO)- Poliomyelitis and Tuberculosis Research Project, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) -Radiognosis and Nuclear Medicine and Jefferson's Ultrasound Research and Education Institute (JUREI), Philadelphia,USA-Diagnostic Ultrasound.

Our Mandate
The three(3) mandates of the UMTH are:
  • Provision of quality tertiary healthcare services in both curative and preventive medicine for people in the catchment area (North-East Sub-Region) and beyond.
  • Provision of quality training of medical and para-medical staff for the sub- region and beyond.
  • Conducting quality research into relevant health and health-related problems.
Location

The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital is located in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, in the North-Eastern corner of Nigeria. The Hospital shares state border with Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe, the six successor States of the defunct North Eastern State. The six States occupying an estimated area of 310,666 square kilometres, have an estimated population of over 30,000,000.00 (2012). The environment within which the University is located is rich in both human and natural resources. Culturally and socially, the region is one of the great meeting points of early African Civilizations. Thus, the remarkable cultures of this region at once indicate the rich rewards in terms of healthcare services delivery, training and research to scholars, students and the population at large.
