What the Department is known for

  1. Scale and Infrastructure
    • It is widely regarded as the largest Interventional Radiology Centre in Africa, housed in a modern three-storey, ~3000 sqm building.
    • It is equipped with two angiography suites, a state-of-the-art Siemens Artis One Edition X Cathlab, ultrasound machines, microwave ablation rooms, and supporting diagnostic units.
    • The Centre is designed not just for service delivery, but also as a training and research hub.
  2. Clinical Services
    • Provides a wide range of minimally invasive procedures, including:
      • Vascular interventions (angioplasty, stenting, embolization).
      • Non-vascular interventions (biopsies, drainages, ablations).
      • Women’s health procedures (uterine artery embolization for fibroids, pelvic interventions).
      • Oncologic interventions (tumor ablation, palliative drainage, chemoembolization).
    • It offers cutting-edge, image-guided therapies that reduce morbidity, preserve organ function, and provide alternatives to open surgery.
  3. Academic Excellence
    • Serves as a training hub for residents and fellows in Radiology and related specialties.
    • Organizes national update courses and workshops (e.g., IR Update Courses in Maiduguri).
    • Strong focus on research output, including landmark dissertations and collaborative projects with international institutions.
  4. Collaborations and Partnerships
    • Works closely with international partners such as the Dotter Institute of Interventional Radiology (California, USA) and Rad-Aid International, who provide training support, equipment, and expertise.
    • Strong ties with Nigerian Society of Interventional Radiologists (NiSIR), the West African College of Surgeons, and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria for accreditation and professional development.
  5. Strategic Importance
    • Functions as a flagship referral centre for complex interventional procedures across North-Eastern Nigeria and neighboring regions.
    • Plays a role in capacity building for IR nurses, technologists, and radiographers.
    • Has become a symbol of modern medical advancement in a region that has faced significant challenges (e.g., conflict, floods).
